What are the consequences of War?

Year 6 – WWII: The consequences of War?

Welcome to our Year 6 class page! I am excited to work with your children during this important and rewarding year. This page will serve as a hub for updates, key information, and resources to help keep you informed and connected to your child’s learning journey. Together, we will ensure that this year is filled with growth, discovery, and memorable experiences. Let’s make it a fantastic year!

Literacy

In Literacy, we will explore the novel Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll, set during World War II. Through this engaging story, we will deepen our understanding of life during the war, focusing on themes such as evacuation, family, and resilience. Pupils will have opportunities to develop their reading comprehension, inference, and creative writing skills through discussions, diary entries, and character analysis related to the novel.

Science

Our Science lessons will tie into the World War II theme through a practical investigation on air resistance. Students will design and test parachutes, learning about forces and how air resistance impacts the speed and movement of objects. This hands-on experiment will link to the use of parachutes during the war and give pupils a chance to develop their skills in prediction, testing, and evaluating results.

Topic

In our topic lessons, we will dive into key aspects of World War II. We’ll begin by studying the Blitz, understanding its impact on major cities in Britain and the measures taken to protect civilians. We will investigate Anderson shelters, discussing their design and purpose, as well as creating our own model shelters. Our learning will also include a focus on evacuation and the emotional and practical effects on children and families. Additionally, we will explore how the war affected Wales, including the changes in communities, industries, and the role Wales played during this global conflict.

This cross-curricular approach will help pupils gain a deeper understanding of World War II, its impact on everyday life, and how communities worked together during challenging times.
