Welcome to Year 1!
Our ‘Expedition’ in Year 1 this term is ‘999 Emergency’ which has a Humanities focus. It teaches the children about the different emergency roles there are, what to do in an emergency and the children learn about ‘The Great Fire of London’.
The children started their learning in Literacy by looking at the story of Zog and the Flying Doctors. They retold the story and made story maps. Over the coming weeks our toy Zog will be stolen from the class and because of this situation the children will learn to solve a crime scene, write a police report and make wanted posters. So far, they have also used their design and technology skills to make moving characters from the fire service. This term the children will continue developing their learning with activities in phonics, spellings, writing and reading .
In Numeracy the children will use the ‘Expedition’ to explore how to make bar graphs – voting on the emergency job they would like when they are older. They will design and build new houses for London after the terrible fire and cost up the products for this activity. The children have also been learning about place value by representing objects and numbers, counting forwards and backwards, comparing objects and numbers, learning < > =, learning to use a number line and ordinal numbers. The children also practise counting in 2s, 5s, 10s daily.
In RE, we have been studying our panel “The Gospel” as part of The Big Frieze. We have recreated the panel by each drawing a section and talked about what the pictures might mean. We found lots of Bible stories hidden within the panel and have been learning about some of them. We will now be looking at The story of The Prodigal Son and how God represents a parent’s love. For our Harvest celebration, the children wrote Harvest prayers and learned and performed Harvest songs. This term we will be learning about Diwali and Christmas.
In Welsh, we have practised a variety of sentence patterns centred around feelings, colours and numbers. The children have built their confidence in asking and answering questions, recording responses and interpreting them on a graph using ICT, reading stories and playing games. Using the sentence patterns they have learnt the children will write about emergency workers and their feelings.
This term the children will be visiting the RNLI and the museum in Porthcawl to further enhance their learning about ‘999 Emergency. They are also looking forward to the next trip which is a trip to the theatre to see Cinderella. The children will soon be busy learning parts and singing songs to participate in our Christmas Nativity play: they will be performing with Year 2.
